Doreen Mary Modisette was called home on April 4, 2022; after almost 97 years on earth. She will be sorely missed by everyone who knew her.
Doreen was born to Percy and Gertrude Hartland on April 26, 1925, in Hereford, England. She met the love of her life, Willie Modisette, in Stoneleigh, England while he was serving in the army during World War II. Willie carried out his courtship of Doreen through letters after returning home, ultimately convincing her to join him and start their new life together in the states. Doreen arrived in Amarillo on June 23, 1946. She insisted they be married before she would go home with him to Wayside.
Doreen and Willie welcomed four children into their home over the next 10 years, Royce, Marian, Fay and Calvin Dee, who sadly lived only a short time. Doreen was active in the Wayside Church and served as the song leader for both the Methodist and Baptist congregations and also taught Sunday school. She worked at Hidden Falls Ranch, Ceta Glenn, and Ceta Canyon church camps preparing meals for the kids. Doreen loved her community. She volunteered as a leader for 4-H and Home Demonstration, passing on her love for sewing and cooking to both young people and adults. Her knitted blankets and booties were given to countless babies over the years. In her free time, she enjoyed gardening, canning and fishing in Pearl’s pond.
She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, two sisters and her son-in-law, Larry Gehring. She is survived by her children, Royce and Pam Modisette of Fritch, Marian Gehring of Lavon, Fay and Jerry Morris of Amarillo, and her siblings E'von Wilson, John Hartland, and Nancie Booker all of England. Doreen was affectionately known as Nanny to many including her grandchildren: Teressa Michelle and Mark McCool of Amarillo, Shane and Casey Robinson of Vega, Alicia and Robert Morris of Weatherford, Bryan and Dana Robinson of Houston, Jeremy Morris of Amarillo, Jay and Heather Morris of Claude, and Jody and Janet Morris of Amarillo. She was also Nanny to 14 great-grandchildren and 11 great-great-grandchildren.
