Charles “Wire” Wright, 93, of Canyon passed away on Monday, July 18, 2022.
A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, July 27, 2022, at 2pm at Hillside Christian Church in Canyon, by Pastor Trae Sweat. The burial will follow the service at Dreamland Cemetery in Canyon.
Wire was born on April 3, 1929, to J.J. and Mae Wright. He was raised in Canyon and graduated from Canyon High School in 1947. Wire excelled in football and continued his football career at West Texas from 1947-1951, winning the Sun Bowl in 1951. Years later, Wire was inducted into the WTAMU Hall of Fame. Wire was drafted by the Chicago Bears in 1951, but missed home and returned to Canyon shortly after, continuing his life in the farming and ranching business. Wire enjoyed taking exceptionally good care of his cows, breakfast at the Ranch House Cafe, and playing dominoes with old and new friends. He was known for his ornery personality, his love for his family, his giving demeanor, and his faith in Jesus Christ.
Wire is preceded in death by his parents, J.J. and Mae Wright, his brother James Wright, his sister Myrtis Slack, his former wife Jean Wright, his son Jimmy Bennett, and his granddaughter Courtney Wright.
Wire is survived by his sons, Chuck Wright and wife Sandra of San Antonio, Jack Wright and wife Kim of Canyon, Keith Wright and wife Mishon of Canyon, and his daughter Susie Wright of Canyon. Wire leaves behind fifteen grandchildren, seventeen great grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild.
